Butterflies and Ladybugs Blog Hop for World Animal Day

Tiger Swallowtail on Butterfly Bush by US Flag

This year the butterflies came to us!

Last summer, we bought, raised, and released Painted Lady butterflies. This year, we wanted to see if we could attract the local butterflies on our own. We planted petunias, lantanas, and butterfly bush for nectar… and milkweed just in case somebody wanted to lay some eggs :)

Bucket of ladybugs

Ladybugs and butterflies are the only bugs I’m not afraid to hold. They’re so cute and fun!

Ladybugs on milkweed eating aphids

We use ladybugs to keep the aphids (those little yellow critters) from killing our milkweed plants. Butterflies won’t lay eggs on unhealthy plants.

Butterfly visiting swimmer

We got lots of swallowtails (black, tiger, and zebra) visiting our backyard everyday. This little beauty decided to stop by while The Chief was out for a swim.

Butterflies with broken wings

We also had a few injured lovelies visit our yard. It amazes me how these guys can still fly around with part of their wings missing.
