Fine-motor Fever (part 1)

This is post #1 of my Fine-motor Fever series.
The Chief’s pencil grip is a little wonky so I’m always on the lookout for fine-motor play ideas to help improve it.
Today we pulled out the clothespins, scissors, and word-find books.
I put shredded paper all over the floor and asked how many could he pick up and put down with the clothespin.
I buy the word-find books with jumbo print from the dollar store. We don’t use them to find the words. Instead, I just write random letters for him to find and circle.
This is me (in orange) showing him how to make a square by connecting the Spiderman heads.
Honestly, I cringe whenever I see him handling scissors because his technique looks a little awkward but he’s actually pretty good at cutting along lines. And because he hasn’t sliced off a finger or poked out an eye yet… I’ve settled in to trusting his skills and not butting in to help every 5 seconds.
He LOVES stickers!
And so do I… because they make for a nice quiet activity!

Here’s a good post on Pencil Grasp Development and other motor skill activities by OT Mom Learning Activities.
